Host Galaxy 1 — Small Magellanic Cloud (21 XGOs)

The Small Magellanic Cloud (a dwarf irregular galaxy) is a prominent southern hemisphere galaxy.  Fortunately, while working on another program I was able to get some good photos of particular regions of the SMC.  It turns out that this object is filled with H II regions.  These are in form of star clusters — both open and semi-globular, as well as clusters with strong emission nebulae.  This chart from Sky Safari shows a number of these in the SMC field,  and the chart is followed by individual photos of the NGC items. Photo: SSON Warrumbungle, 90 seconds on 2019-06-20 at 14:42 UTC.  5 of these objects come up in Sky Safari as Open Clusters; NGC 248 is classified as a Bright Emission Nebula.  These identifications are confirmed in several other sources.

 

Photo: SSON Warrumbungle, 90 seconds on 2019-06-11 at 15:08:50 UTC.  NGC 330 is a dense Open Cluster containing thousands of stars.  NGC 306, by contrast, while also an Open Cluster, is much less dense.   IC 1611 and 1612 are smaller, denser Open Clusters.

 

Photo: SSON Warrumbungle, 90 seconds on 2019-06-20 at 14:10 UTC.  NGC 346 is classified as a Bright Nebula, but you can easily see the cluster of young, bright stars at its center.  NGC 371 is a large open cluster that is surrounded by an H II Emission Nebula.
